Bedroom beautification – the cheapest headboard ever?

So what do you do when sleeping on a mattress on the floor kinda makes you feel like you’re living in a dorm, but your stubborn husband won’t buy a proper bed because one of these days your proper bed in Ottawa will come to Nova Scotia, and you can’t spend a lot of money on something temporary? You go down into the basement and see if there’s anything you can use to make a headboard.

Well here’s something…

cabinet doors

Yes, those are old dirty kitchen cabinet doors. But they could be so much more! I tried out different combinations of doors until I came up with one that was just the right width for a king size headboard.

three doors

I used TSP Eco to clean them up…

…and then I painted them white. Except this is what they looked like after two coats of milk paint.

milk paint problem

This was just one of my recent milk paint fails. Which is how I came across this INSL-X Cabinet Coat paint. I’m really digging this paint.

Two coats of Simply White, and the doors looked like new. Well, on the fronts anyway – why bother painting the backs when nobody’s ever going to see them, right? Right! :-)

Brian attached the three doors to each other with metal plates so that they could be hung as one piece instead of three pieces. The two brass things you can see on the bottom are picture hangers. Yep, that’s all it takes to hang this baby on the wall.

We attached the headboard with the bottom just about the same height as the top of the mattress.

And voila – possibly the cheapest headboard ever!

The night tables were also a budget makeover. Click here if you’d like to check out the transformation.

The dorm vibe is slowly going away – just ignore the wrinkly bedding ;-)

    1. Glad you like it :-) I had to be creative because there was no way Brian was going to say yes to buying a new headboard! It's still not quite a proper bed, but it feels a lot more like one now :-)

    1. Thanks Anne :-) Good thing whoever changed the kitchen cabinets left the old doors in the basement! Would have been better if I'd found a whole be in the basement, but I'll take what I can get :-D
