Sunday adventure with Sybil & Wendy – Part II, Peggy’s Cove

So to pick up where I left off in my last blog post, after hiking around Polly’s Cove, Sybil and I did some exploring around Peggy’s Cove. Of course, there’s the famous Peggy’s Cove lighthouse…

But there’s a whole lot more to see. Sybil pointed out this rock carving that I hadn’t noticed the other times I’d been to Peggy’s Cove.

The carving is by William DeGarthe and is a memorial to the fishermen of Peggy’s Cove.

Of course, being a fishing village, there are lots of lobster traps and fishing boats and fishing sheds…

Sybil and I were a bit obsessed with finding lighthouse reflections in the puddles. This is the best I could do.

Oh, and we weren’t really the only people at Peggy’s Cove, I just got creative with my picture-taking and managed to avoid getting most of the people in my shots :-)

Such a great day enjoying spectacular scenery with a great group of people. And thank you to Sybil and Wendy for being up for a last-minute adventure :-) To check out more pictures and learn more about the cool carvings at Peggy’s Cove, click here to go to Sybil’s blog.

Sunday adventure with Sybil & Wendy – Part 1, Polly’s Cove

On Friday, I read a blog post about Polly’s Cove and decided I needed to add it to my list of places to check out. On Saturday, Scotian Hiker posted that he was leading a hike to Polly’s Cove on Sunday. How could I not go!? I messaged my adventure buddy Sybil to see if she wanted to go to go, and she was in :-)

Polly’s Cove is just a couple of kilometers up the road from the more popular Peggy’s Cove. In fact, you can see the lighthouse and village from Polly’s Cove…

I have no idea why Polly’s Cove is called Polly’s Cove. I know Peggy’s Cove is named after a lady named…. Margaret.

The terrain at Polly’s Cove reminds me of the High Head Trail, which I hiked with Sybil and my other adventure buddy Sara last year. Except it’s more rugged and there was more climbing involved.

OK, I didn’t actually do this rock climbing, but there were a couple of times when a helping hand from Scotian Hiker got me up or down a rock. He’s very nimble, see? :-)

We were all curious about this concrete foundation near the beginning of the trail..

pm concrete structure

I did some Googling after I got home, and came across this: The structure is actually the foundation of a small radar station from years passed. There's some metal pieces in nearby rocks which were apparently used to mount a satellite or two, according to my father who moved out here in the late 50's - early 60's. Edit: Asked my father, it was not active when he moved out here. His uncle (also from the area) informed him that it was last used during the time of WWII.

I normally get annoyed when people deface nature, but I do love this graffiti on the foundation…

Not sure if she’s holding up the rock or if the rock is holding her up!

Oh Deer

Dusk is deer dinner time around here. And our backyard must be growing something tasty, because lately there have been a lot of deer dining here. These are some of tonight’s dinner guests…

This one was keeping a close eye on me!

Love their fluffy white tails. This little one was prancing around with her tail up in the air like she was all that :-)

Roofing and rainbows

The roofing on the water side of the house is done – WOOT! Good thing Brian has overcome his fear of heights, this is one tall and steep roof!  Choosing the roof was tough – it’s one thing that you definitely want to get right! After much debate, we finally decided on the Rustic metal shingle from Classic Metal Roofing Systems Canada and the colour is Vermont Slate. It’s a nice greyish-blue that works perfectly with the grey frames around the skylights.

The weather on Monday as beautiful, so I went for a walk along the cliffs to see what the house looks like from a distance. And because I just felt like walking along the cliffs because it was a gorgeous sunny day :-)

There’s our house!

There were some really cool rainbows happening on the waves. Well, technically I guess they’re prisms, but rainbows works better with roofing ;-)

I can’t believe how lucky we are to call this beautiful place home!
