Beach bums

We’ve had a lot of fog around here lately. Nine straight days of fog, in fact. Most mornings we wake up to fog, then there are varying degrees of fog during the day, and fog at night. Too much fog! So in attempt to escape the fog and just do something a bit different, last Wednesday I grabbed Jackson and we headed off on a little beach adventure.

Once we got farther inland, the fog disappeared and we had sunny blue skies on our drive to the beach. Yay! But we got stuck behind a truck painting the yellow lines on the highway. Boo! So I decided to pull over and take some pictures. I’ve been wanting to take pictures here for the longest time, and now I finally got my pics :-)

Once I figured the truck was far enough ahead, we continued on our way to the beach. And we did manage to avoid the truck, but not so lucky about the fog!

It wasn’t so bad, though. With the fog all around us, it felt like we were the only people on the beach. Well, us and this seagull…

It looks like this rock has a big pink crazy hairdo!

We could hear the waves, we just couldn’t see them very well.

So in the end we didn’t really escape the fog, but Jackson and I had a relaxing and peaceful afternoon together being beach bums :-)

We finally did have some sunny days – three straight days, in fact! – but as I’m writing this blog post, we’re surrounded by fog again today. Oh well, what can you do!

Family, friends, fun, and the flu

Wow, June has been a crazy month! It actually started at the end of May with a big surprise 80th birthday for my dad back in Montreal…

Then I spent a week visiting my dad and his girlfriend and made a quick trip to Ottawa to visit a few friends. I had to check out our old house while I was there – the new owners chopped down my beautiful birch tree!

And I got to visit our former foster dog Sophie :-) She covered me in sweet Sophie kisses!

It was a great week, till the airport. I missed my flight back to Nova Scotia – thank you Air Canada for changing my gate and leaving me behind. Grrrr…. anyway, when I finally got back to NS, my cousin Lynn was here to visit for a few days…

Then the day after Lynn left, I hung out with my friend Vickie who was here visiting from BC.

Then I actually had a few days at home! Alone! With nothing to do and nobody to talk to! Till Saturday, when my friend Rona came to visit. She spent a couple of days here, and then the two of us headed up to Cape Breton for a few days.

And then two days after I got back from Cape Breton, I got the flu. No pictures of that! But we did have a little bit of excitement between the not-so-fun flu activities – we bought a new car. Well, it’s used, but new to us – a 2013 Subaru Impreza. I like!

And that, my friends, is why there hasn’t been much blogging this month! Not a lot of action on the house either, other than Brian figuring out the venting and plumbing and installing some pipes and working on the electrical. But the action did pick up today – more on that next!

Sunday adventure with Sybil & Wendy – Part II, Peggy’s Cove

So to pick up where I left off in my last blog post, after hiking around Polly’s Cove, Sybil and I did some exploring around Peggy’s Cove. Of course, there’s the famous Peggy’s Cove lighthouse…

But there’s a whole lot more to see. Sybil pointed out this rock carving that I hadn’t noticed the other times I’d been to Peggy’s Cove.

The carving is by William DeGarthe and is a memorial to the fishermen of Peggy’s Cove.

Of course, being a fishing village, there are lots of lobster traps and fishing boats and fishing sheds…

Sybil and I were a bit obsessed with finding lighthouse reflections in the puddles. This is the best I could do.

Oh, and we weren’t really the only people at Peggy’s Cove, I just got creative with my picture-taking and managed to avoid getting most of the people in my shots :-)

Such a great day enjoying spectacular scenery with a great group of people. And thank you to Sybil and Wendy for being up for a last-minute adventure :-) To check out more pictures and learn more about the cool carvings at Peggy’s Cove, click here to go to Sybil’s blog.

Sunday adventure with Sybil & Wendy – Part 1, Polly’s Cove

On Friday, I read a blog post about Polly’s Cove and decided I needed to add it to my list of places to check out. On Saturday, Scotian Hiker posted that he was leading a hike to Polly’s Cove on Sunday. How could I not go!? I messaged my adventure buddy Sybil to see if she wanted to go to go, and she was in :-)

Polly’s Cove is just a couple of kilometers up the road from the more popular Peggy’s Cove. In fact, you can see the lighthouse and village from Polly’s Cove…

I have no idea why Polly’s Cove is called Polly’s Cove. I know Peggy’s Cove is named after a lady named…. Margaret.

The terrain at Polly’s Cove reminds me of the High Head Trail, which I hiked with Sybil and my other adventure buddy Sara last year. Except it’s more rugged and there was more climbing involved.

OK, I didn’t actually do this rock climbing, but there were a couple of times when a helping hand from Scotian Hiker got me up or down a rock. He’s very nimble, see? :-)

We were all curious about this concrete foundation near the beginning of the trail..

pm concrete structure

I did some Googling after I got home, and came across this: The structure is actually the foundation of a small radar station from years passed. There's some metal pieces in nearby rocks which were apparently used to mount a satellite or two, according to my father who moved out here in the late 50's - early 60's. Edit: Asked my father, it was not active when he moved out here. His uncle (also from the area) informed him that it was last used during the time of WWII.

I normally get annoyed when people deface nature, but I do love this graffiti on the foundation…

Not sure if she’s holding up the rock or if the rock is holding her up!
