Kitchen contemplation – Cabinets

We’re still a long way off from decorating our house – it’s not even a hole on the ground yet! But I’ve been saving inspiration pictures for the last 1-1/2 years, and thought it would be nice to take a break from the build stuff to share some of my ideas.

First up is the kitchen. This is a tough one – it’s one of those rooms where you REALLY want to make sure you get it right, because it’s not so easy to change it up a few years down the road. That being said, I’m seriously leaning towards blue cabinets. We’re only going to have lower cabinets, no uppers. The main kitchen wall is going to be all windows from the tops of the countertops up to the ceiling, so there won’t be a tiled backsplash. So blue cabinets would be a great way to bring colour into the kitchen.

I really like the combination of cobalt blue, grey, white, and light wood in this kitchen.

This kitchen is very similar to the one above – is that even the same stove?!

love it or list it 2

These cabinets are more of a navy blue. Hey, what’s up with these stoves!?

This was my original thought for the kitchen – grey cabinets with a navy island.

I was also thinking of maybe going with light stained wood cabinets, but I think we’ll have enough wood in the house with ceiling beams and hardwood flooring. Although I do really like this look too….

And let’s not even get started on countertops and appliances and faucets and flooring… so many decisions to make and we’ve barely started!

What do you think about blue kitchen cabinets?

  1. Honestly... I think blue and grey cabinets are going to look very dated in a few years. The way espresso wood ones (or honey oak!) do now. I got caught up in cabinet colors when I renovated my kitchen. Thank goodness I saw the light and went with classic white in the end. I love being able to accessorize with any color accessories, in any season. My friends ask how I keep my kitchen so stylish and honestly, I think it has a lot to do with having dish towels in a rainbow of colours. That hit of color makes all the difference.

My advice- if you decide on anything in a color (like navy or grey), make sure you put it somewhere you can repaint easily. You might not think you'll ever repaint but I promise you, you will!

Thanks for sharing this renovation. It's fascinating to watch. Be gentle with yourself- there are lots of choices still to be made and it's easy to drive yourself crazy in the process!

    1. Thanks so much for your feedback :-) Our previous kitchen had pinkish oak cabinets, and they were the worst! But were probably very stylish when the house was built. Or maybe not ;-) Definitely will be giving this a lot of thought, and no final decisions will be made for quite a while yet. Yes, for too many choices to make!

    2. If you haven't already, check out Maria Killam's blog (all about colour). She advocates choosing colours that really make you happy and being aware of neutral trends- we're in a grey trend now, having just come through the brown trend (before that was green). I found this blog very helpful when it came to making decisions in my renovation- I wanted classic and timeless but kept being seduced by pretty, shiny tiles!

I love navy and would be tempted to put it on an island with white cabinets around the perimeter. It feels like a neutral, classic and very coastal thing to do but this is YOUR house, not my house!

    3. Oh yes, I'm familiar with Maria's blog. I totally agree with using colours that make you happy - it's your home and the place where you want to feel happy and comfortable surround yourself with things that you love :-)

White cabinets and a navy island was my original idea for the kitchen :-) I really like that look, especially with some rustic wood in the mix. Good thing I don't have to make a final decision today, I just can't decide what direction to go!
