Lovely Lunenburg – Part I

Last Thursday, I dropped our car off at a garage in Lunenburg, went to the farmer’s market specifically to buy some Vietnamese spring rolls (YUMMO!). and then spent the next couple of hours walking around the town and taking pictures. LOTS of pictures! I have so many pictures of Lunenburg to show you, I’m going to have to divide them up into a few posts :-)

Lunenburg was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, and is considered the best example of a planned British colonial settlement in Canada. The town has an interesting history, going back to the 1600s when it was a Mi’kmaq / Acadian village named Mirligueche. Lunenburg was established by the British in 1753, who pretty much just snatched it from the Mi’kmaq. No wonder they came back and raided the town nine times! Click here to read the whole history of Lunenburg and click here to see what’s going on in Lunenburg today.

Today, Lunenburg’s main industry is tourism. Come for a visit and you’ll see why! There’s the beautiful harbour front, lots of unique shops, restaurants, the fisheries museum… there’s so much to see and do!

Brian thinks it’s weird that I like to take pictures of doors. Fine, call me weird, I love doors! And there are lots of colourful ones in Lunenburg…

You know I couldn’t pass up taking a picture of a purple door!

Chippy & worn but still colourful & pretty :-)

The geraniums add a nice pop of colour…

Love this one! More traditional colours, but so pretty…

Not so colourful, but aren’t the arches great?

Even a pink door!

These sheds caught my eye too…

Doesn’t this front porch look like a great spot to sit back and relax and sip a glass of lemonade on a hot summer day?

    1. I agree Anne, the storm doors are great - obviously people in Lunenburg aren't afraid of colour :-) My next post will have pictures of the houses these doors are attached to :-)
